Splott-based charity helps older people stay safe and well in their homes

15 January 2018

A local charity that helps people stay safe and well in their homes has been chosen by the Splott Road Co-op store as one of the charities to share its Community Fund this year and needs help to make the most of the funding offered by the Co-op.

Charity Care & Repair Cardiff and the Vale, based on Ocean Park in Splott, works actively to ensure that all older people have homes that are safe, secure and appropriate to their needs.  The charity offers a home visiting service that is FREE of charge and tailored to each individual’s needs.

Care & Repair was born in Ferndale, Rhondda in 1979 in response to acute problems faced by older homeowners living in housing that was unfit for human habitation and lacking in basic amenities.

They help people over 60 by:

  • Undertaking a healthy home check
  • Advising on options to repair, maintain or adapt a home
  • Help to save energy and save money on fuel bills
  • Helping to find sources of funding for work
  • Helping to find a reliable and local contractor
  • Referring to other local services if needed

Staff also talk to local groups about energy saving tips, heating the home and saving money on fuel bills.

Operational Manager, Julia Folland, said:

“Our mission is to support older people to repair, adapt and maintain their homes. We do this so that all older people are able to live in safe, secure, warm and comfortable homes which suits them and their lives and maximises their independence.”

If you are over 60, you can call 029 20473337 for further information, advice or a free home visit to discuss your home.

Julia Folland, said:

“We have been lucky enough to be chosen as one of three local charities to receive some support from the Co-op Community Fund and our store is the Splott Road store.  We are keen to advertise this and encourage people who shop in the Co-op and have a card to nominate us to receive the 1% charity funds available.”
