Last week, former Wales and Newport rugby stars, Alix Popham and Peter Rogers, were part of an eight-man team that raced across America on bikes.
The non-stop 3000-mile ride takes competitors from west to east coast USA and is considered one of the world’s toughest cycling events.
Former Wales Prop Peter Rogers is completing this epic challenge on a second hand bike that he picked up from Cardiff’s Splott Market for just £60!
Riding out of California last Saturday, Mr Popham and Mr Rogers aimed to cross the finish line at Maryland on Friday.
Race Across America (RAAM) is one of the most respected and longest-running endurance events in existence.
The former Wales rugby Internationals rode with Leadership Challenges whom have 2 home teams competing this year.
The two teams, riding as ‘Antonia’s Friends’ were racing in memory of Antonia Thomas, from Corsham, who died after a sudden asthma attack in 2009, aged 10.
For a race considered 30 per cent harder than the Tour de France, the teams had their work cut out to scale the 170,000 vertical feet between two oceans and finish RAAM within the designated 9-day window.
But as the miles went up, so too did the banner of asthma awareness and funding for an extremely worthy cause.
