Splott Road Bridge reopened today to traffic following full closure caused by the Citadel collapse last month. The bridge is now allowing single-flow traffic directed by a four-way traffic light system, as it was before the tragic incident which claimed a man’s life.
This will be a relief to residents of Splott and Adamsdown, especially those relying on the number 11 bus to travel from Pengam to the city centre (and surely to the bus drivers as well; there was a particularly interesting gridlock moment on Habershon Street last week when three busses met in a street that’s sometimes hard to squeeze down in a Fiat Punto).
However, relief will be short-lived as the bridge is due to close again to traffic from the 13th of August until the 4th of September for necessary bridge works to be completed.
In addition, the pedestrian bridge known as the Black Bridge linking Splott to Adamsdown (at the end of Sanquhar Street) will be closed overnight on weekends in August starting from the 5th.
According to the Network Rail website “The bridge is being rebuilt in two phases to help maintain traffic flow and pedestrian access. It will be closed to all vehicles for three weeks while half of the bridge – the carriageway carrying traffic from Adamsdown to Splott – is demolished. The bridge is expected to reopen on 4 September. Following the reconstruction of the Adamsdown to Splott side of the bridge, the remaining side of the bridge will close, with the second phase of the bridge’s reconstruction completed by autumn 2018.
Pedestrians will still be able to access the bridge except for limited periods of demolition work when the bridge will be fully closed with a diversionary route in place. During these times, a fully accessible minibus service will be available to transport members of the public from one side of the bridge to the other.
Work is ongoing at Adamsdown footbridge, which is closed every Saturday from 10pm until 7am on Sunday until autumn 2017. The footbridge will be completely closed over August bank holiday weekend from 26 – 28 August.”
If you live in Splott, Adamsdown or Tremorfa it’s worth reviewing travel plans for August and coming up with a few alternative routes (not sure if an official diversion route has been announced yet, but I’ll keep checking and will post an update).
