New Willows – consultation launched for Splott school

Influencing the future – the redevelopment of Willows High School

Willows High School is being relocated from Tremorfa to three parcels of land at Splott Market, Portmanmoor Road and 3G pitches at the former tennis centre, which presents an exciting opportunity for local residents to help shape the future of the school.

An engagement period is taking place from Monday 14 June to the 23rd of July and Cardiff Council wants to hear your views.

The six week non-statutory engagement process will give pupils, the school, parents and the wider community the chance to have a say on how the new school could develop to meet the needs of the children and young people and the wider community it serves.

Your views and opinions are valued. They will play an integral part in shaping the future for the new school, including not only the development for the new building, but also a new curriculum and a potential rebrand.

The Council would like to hear from you:

• What do you like about the plans for the new school?
• Do you have any suggestions to make it even better?
• How can the new school benefit the community?
• How can the community benefit the new school?
• What do other schools have that you would like to see at Willows?

I don’t have children in Willows. Is this relevant to me?

Yes it is. Willows is more than just a school. It’s an arm of the community and a facility that can benefit all residents, not just pupils. The more feedback the Council receives now, the more chance we have of influencing the design and scope of the school in a positive way.

What would you like to see at the school? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Adult learning classes in the evenings and not just during the daytime;
  • Wildflower meadows which can be accessed outside of school hours by residents;
  • Food growing spaces;
  • Access to the sports pitches for local groups;
  • Proper access to the full-size sports hall outside of school hours to compensate for loosing the one at STAR Centre (still smarting over that one. I miss badminton!);
  • Closer links between the school and community organisations like Keep Splott Tidy, Stargarallot, Railway Gardens (maybe mini hubs at the school!);
  • Closer links between the school and local businesses – could there be more vocational teaching or local work experience opportunities?

The list could go on and on! Don’t be shy – have a read of the engagement document in the link below and complete the survey.
