Work gets underway to develop a new games and puzzle-themed play area in Splott next week.
As part of the Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Scheme programme and with funding from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, delivery of the new playground in Splott Park begins on Monday January 27 and is expected to last 14 weeks.
The Neighbourhood Renewal Schemes programme is based on regeneration priorities identified by ward councillors, as representatives of their communities and delivers regeneration projects all over the city ranging from new parks and street improvements to community safety improvements.
The design of the Splott playground was finalised, taking into consideration the views of the local community on what they would like to see in the park. The area includes play equipment for toddlers, juniors and teens as well as accessible play equipment and natural play areas.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lee Bridgeman said:
“I’m pleased to see work getting underway on this scheme – it’s a fantastic, fun design.
“The new playground will provide a vibrant and inclusive environment for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy, which I’m sure will have a positive impact on the local community.”
The new park will feature the following:
- Toddlers’ play features
- Spring toys
- Tube slide & climbing mound
- A seating area made of giant dice
- A wheelchair accessible roundabout
- A climbing play structure
- A 3D jigsaw
- Swings and a seesaw
In a post on Facebook by Splott, Tremorfa and Pengam Green Labour News, councillors said:
“We’re so proud to share this news.
As candidates at the last Council election, we promised we would deliver a new, improved and expanded Playground at Splott Park, following a 500+ petition from resident.
Following the election, we wrote the funding bid ourselves, for Neighbourhood Regeneration funding – and were successful, with our application being awarded the highest score of any bid.
We then worked to ensure local residents and children were consulted on the design of the playground, and helped secure Shared Prosperity Funding to make sure the final design was one the whole community would be proud of.
So today sees a promise delivered – a great example of how local Councillors, local residents, and Labour-run Cardiff Council can work together to deliver for Splott, Tremorfa, and Pengam Green.
Huge thanks to everybody who’s worked on this, in particular the local residents who drove the original campaign, and who’ve stayed involved since!
We’re so excited to see work start, and can’t wait to see it open later in the Spring.”
Residents took to the comments to say how much they are looking forward to the new park and Inksplott looks forward to reporting on its progress and launch in the next few months.
