Inksplott loves promoting local businesses and was delighted to interview Splott’s latest entrepreneur, Rhian Kate, who has her own business making beautiful jewellery.
Inksplott: Hi Rhian, thank you for being interviewed for Inksplott. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your business, Rhian Kate?
Rhian: I’m Rhian and I set up my jewellery business after I finished university just over 2 years ago, I’ve always had a passion for making and being able to sell items that I have designed and hand crafted myself; it fills me with so much joy!
Inksplott: How did you get into this? Can you please tell us a little about the history of your business?
Rhian: I did a degree in making and it was just a natural progression for me. I’ve always loved selling what I make and I had an opportunity to have mentoring and a space to work for a year after I finished Uni. It seemed too good to pass up so I set up ‘Rhian Kate’ and have never looked back.
Inksplott: And how come the business is in Splott?
Rhian: I am a new resident to Splott! It’s quite nice to live in an area close to a post office without the long queues of the one in town. Running your own business can be stressful so being somewhere that’s quiet and has everything you need in a close proximity really makes a difference.
Inksplott: What’s your speciality?
Rhian: The jewellery I make is all handmade so there are a few processes that I specialise in. Pewter is the main material I use; it has a greyish colour, so I create a texture on the surface of the pewter that means each piece is unique.
Inksplott: What’s your best story since setting up the business?
Rhian: Probably when I won an award! I had to pitch my business to a panel of judges and they picked mine as one of the award winners. It was an incredible experience and never thought I’d ever win something like that!
Inksplott: Tell us a secret or something about Splott that we won’t know.
Rhian: I’m still discovering Splott, so I can’t suggest anything but I’m looking forward to discovering more of Splott.
Inksplott: Any exciting plans or events on the horizon?
Rhian: At the moment it’s just a case of working on progression by working out what I want out of my business and what direction I’d like it to go in, but hopefully I’ll have a stall at more markets this year.
