Volunteer group, Keep Splott Tidy, was recently delighted to receive a funding boost of £250 from Cardiff Bay Rotary Club to buy extra litter pickers and hoops to help Splott residents conduct localised litter picks as part of their daily exercise.
The funding boost will enable the group to buy five new litter pickers in adult size, five new litter pickers for children and five new hoops and distribute them to residents who would like to regularly pick litter close to their homes.
Louise Clarke, Secretary of the group said:
During the lockdown we haven’t been able to litter pick as a group but the demand has still been there, so we set up a loan system for individuals to go and litter pick on their own. Massive thank you to Cardiff Bay Rotary Club for their donation of equipment, which helps more volunteers litter pick. This will help more volunteers to become litter champions and continue their hard work to keep Splott tidy.
Keep Splott Tidy was established in 2016 by three Splott residents, Lynne Thomas, Louise Clarke and Peter Durrant, in response to residents’ requests for a local litter-picking group and their own desire to combat fly-tipping close to where they lived.
Since its launch, hundreds of residents have collected thousands of bags of litter, supported by Keep Wales Tidy and Cardiff Council’s #LoveWhereYouLive programme, and have come to be friends and colleagues in the campaign against litter.
Lynne Thomas, Chair of Keep Splott Tidy (that’s me by the way!) said:
We started with a passion to improve the physical environment of where we live but found that Keep Splott Tidy became so much more! Neighbours became friends, people became more aware of community activism and the ‘keep tidy’ ethos spread throughout Splott. We have had people stop in their cars to thank us for what we do, give us boxes of chocolates when they see us litter picking in their area and want to become more involved. It has been a pleasure to be part of.
Monthly litter picks will resume when safe, but if you would like to become a Keep Splott Tidy Champion in the meantime, please email keepsplotttidy@gmail.com.
