Litter has been a big issue in Splott this week, and there have been lots of conversations online and between residents, the local authority, councillors and Wales Online about the issue.
There are many thoughts around a solution, but for the here and now, I want to let people know how they can make a positive difference, if they want to.
Because, my fellow Splotties, we are people that don’t sit on our hands and wait for other people to sort out our problems. We are a community of proactive go-getters who say ‘hell no, give me a litter picker!’ when faced with a litter(al) problem.
Did you know, there are three litter picking volunteer groups in Splott that you can join in with to help make a difference? There are and here’s some more information:
Keep Splott Tidy – last weekend of the month
These Wombles of Splott initiated in 2016 due to public demand. So many people approached Inksplott (that would be me, hello!), and co-founders Louise Clarke and Peter Durrant, to ask how they could become involved in litter picking in the area, we set up a constituted organisation and run monthly litter picks around different areas of Splott.
All equipment is provided and it’s a brilliant way to meet new people and make a positive difference.
To find out more, follow them on Facebook and/or Twitter (yeah, I’m still not calling it X).
Their next litter pick is on Saturday the 20th July at Splott Park.
Oasis Cardiff – Friday afternoons
Oasis Cardiff is a fantastic Splott-based organisation that helps refugees and asylum seekers integrate within their local community. They do a multitude of amazing things, including a weekly litter pick on a Friday afternoon.
They would love local people to join their volunteers and provide all the equipment.
They meet at 1.30pm on Friday afternoons at the front of the centre on Splott Road (ask for Kirran if in doubt) and go out for an hour’s litter pick.
Splott Community Volunteers
Based at the back of the STAR Leisure Centre on Splott Road (entry opposite A1 Tyres on Splott Road), this charity heads out on the first Friday of each month to litter pick in the streets around Splott Road, often teaming up with Oasis.
They provide equipment and leave the centre at 1.15pm, if you would like to join them.
