Splott’s Sporting Heroes

Splott boasts a proud pantheon of sporting heroes.

Did you know that the first-ever Black captain of a Great Britain team was a Splott lad?

Clive Sullivan MBE captained and represented Great Britain ‘s Rugby League team 17 times and appeared three World Cups. When he died of cancer 1985, aged 47, the city of Hull renamed the city’s main approach road in his honour.

The current Wales football manager, Craig Bellamy was also born in Splott, and spent his early years here.

From an earlier era, football legend Len Davies played for Cardiff City in the 1927 FA Cup final, to become the only Welsh side to lift the trophy. He helped Wales win the Home Championship in 1924 and 1928.

Who’s your Splott hero? Share your ideas or support for other ideas as we create a ‘pocket museum’ telling ‘The Story of Splott in 50 objects’.

The museum is a deck of cards, each card telling its different Splott story, its events, people, places, or things.

You can support this exciting project by sharing your ideas and also supporting when launched later this week the crowdfunding campaign which enables you to buy your very own Splott ‘pocket museum’.
