The last day of The Fleurs

Splott says goodbye to one of it’s oldest establishments this weekend.

This weekend marks the end of an era in Splott. The much loved New Fleurs Sports and Social Club on Walker Road closes its doors for the final time as the owners retire.

Despite efforts lasting many years to secure a new management team to keep the premises as a club for local people, it was not possible and the property was sold at auction earlier this year. We believe a housing association bought the pub (this is unconfirmed).

The owners, Phil and Debbie posted this beautiful message on Facebook:

As most of you are already aware, Fleurs will close at the end of this month due to our long awaited Retirement.

We have run Public Houses throughout Cardiff for the last 44 years, just shy of 21 years of which have been spent very happily here at Fleurs.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our valued Customers, those who have held many an Event here, our Sports Teams, from Darts, Skittles, Pool & Bridgend Street AFC for your continued Custom, Support & Friendship throughout all of these years.

We further wish to invite you & hope you can join us for one last Celebration on Saturday 27th July 🍾🥂🍻🍷🎉

The club social posted this shortly afterwards:

This Saturday July 27th marks a sad day for us as a club.

After calling the New Fleur’s our home for the last 39 years final orders will be called one last time and the doors shut for good 🥹

The place holds many memories and has held many of our presentations, club nights and more.

Relationships and friendships made through football and within the Fleurs to last a lifetime too ⚽💪

It also and as importantly gave us a base every weekend for all our teams to run from, in the 90’s running four Senior teams and still to this day👌

All our achievements and team photos proudly adourned the walls 🇦🇹🏆

We therefore find it fitting that we thank the previous owners the Furnish family who we followed from The Ruperra. Dai and Mo were great people to us as a club and we will be forever thankful for their fantastic support of BSAFC 👏

Last and not least a massive, massive thank you to the James family. Phil/Jammo & Debbie (pictured) have been fantastic to us as a club for 21 years👌

They’ve always been superb hosts and have been unwavering in their support of our club in some testing times.

They’ve not just supported and extended their hospitality to Bridgend Street AFC but to local skittles, darts and pool teams too.

Plus serving the local community with their beers, food and Sunday dinners 🍻🍽️

We wish you both every happiness in your retirement, it’s fully earned and deserved. 👏

We can’t thank you enough for your hard work and support of our club ❤️

We have two teams in action tomorrow and are extending an invite to past, present players and people from within the club to show your support one last time.

Get along at some point during Saturday for one last beer to say goodbye and thank you to Jammo & Debbie 🍻🥲🇦🇹

According to the brilliant Splottlands Facebook page, the New Fleurs started as Splott Non Political Club, bought by Fleurs Sullivan. Dai Furnish then bought the club and had it extended. Dai sold it to the present owner, and two directory lists are from 1955 and 1972.

Inksplott wishes Phil and Debbie all the very best for the future. You have been absolute Splott stars! Thank you for everything you’ve done and we wish you a very happy (and well deserved) retirement.
