What’s on in Splott this August?

The month may be nearly half gone, but there’s lots still going on in our part of Cardiff this August!

Here’s a handy list of events and activities in Splott and surrounding areas…

Wednesday 14th August – Fuel Vouchers & Furry Friends

Join Splott Community Volunteers and National Energy Action at the back of the STAR Centre from 1.30pm – 3pm for some animal encounters, free drinks and snacks and handy energy advice.

Wednesday 14th August – Bingo Night

Join the Tremorfa Pantry crew on Wednesday 14th from 7pm onwards for their prize bingo night at Tremorfa Hall (on Tweedsmuir Road).

Friday 16th August – Get into Volunteering

Thinking about volunteering but not sure who’s looking for what help? Pop along to the back of the STAR Centre this Friday and find out! Plus there’s free food and a free raffle with some fab prizes. Tidy.

Friday 16th August – Community Fun Day

Next week a community-led event organised by Cardiff Women’s Aid will be hosted at Railway Gardens.

Pop along to enjoy a free Community Fun Day on Friday 16th August with circus performances by NoFitState, games, stalls, crafts, food and more!

Sunday 18th August – Family Fun Day

Head over to the Boomerang Indoor Training Facility on Sunday the 18th for their family fun day with plenty of free activities.

Wednesday 21st August – Youth Got Talent

Want to show off your singing skills or dance moves? Well this is your perfect opportunity! Take part in this fantastic talent contest or just pop along and watch the amazing performers on the day.

3pm – 7pm at Eastmoors Youth Centre, Sanquhar Street.

Thursday 22nd August – Play Party

Join Seren in the Community on Thursday 22nd August at the back of the STAR Centre between 2pm and 4pm for their summer play party. Suitable for children age 5+

Thursday 22nd August – Keep Splott Tidy in Moorland Park

Join the Wombles of Splott for their 8th birthday as they litter pick Moorland Park. Meet at 6pm by the Swansea Street entrance to the park.

All equipment provided (and they’re a right friendly bunch!).

Wednesday 28th August – Humans of Railway Gardens

Enjoy an evening in Railway Gardens on Wednesday 28th August from 4:30-7:00pm and explore this portrait #exhibition created by local photographer #TamsinStirling, “Humans of #RailwayGardens

Saturday 31st August – Parc Fest Bamboo Community Arts Festival

On the last day in August there will be a fantastic community festival in Anderson Fields in Adamsdown. The event will kick off with a parade down Clifton Street at 12noon, followed by the festival in the field from 12.30pm to 5pm.

There will be artwork, performances, circus activities, arts & crafts, music, a bamboo circus show, games and community stalls with free activities.

There will also be food and drink to buy.

The Bamboo Festival is for residents of Splott, Tremorfa and Adamsdown. The project welcomes refugees, asylum seekers and people in supported housing.

Weekly activities

Let’s have a gander at the regular list of things going on…

Mondays

Join Splott Community Volunteers from 10am to 12 noon for a cuppa and a cake on Memory Mondays. Residents get together to share memories of old Splott (who knew that Rolfe’s the Florist used to be a pet food store with bird seed being served iin paper bags from a wooden drawer in a cabinet? Well it was!)

Tuesdays

Every Tuesday morning in term time, a community group at St Philip’s Church on Tweedsmuir Road in Tremorfa provides free coffee and cake and the chance to chat.

Welsh learners’ practice group at Railway Gardens on Tuesday afternoons!

At 1.30 on Tuesdays at Railway Gardens there’s Baby & Parent Support Group for free. Pop along and meet other parents and other babies! Find them at the top of Adeline Street off Railway Street.

Do you have a handy skill to share? Pop along to the GoodShed at Railway Gardens between 2pm and 4pm to build stuff and drink tea!

Wednesdays

Join Splott Community Volunteers for Knit and Natter between 10am and 12 noon for a cuppa and a cake and learn some new knitting skills while having a chat. Refreshments provided for free. Also, once a month, there will be a mobile wool and embroidery shop, Wool on Wheels, joining them.

Forces of Nature after school nature club for children runs at Railway Gardens from 3.15pm to 4.30pm. Find out more here. No need to book though -just pop along (and there’s a free snack for kids).

Splo-Down, a food cooperative operating from a container at the back of the old STAR Leisure Centre on Splott Road offer great quality and value for money bags of fresh veg for affordable prices between 5pm and 7pm. Pay what you can. More information here.

You can also pop along to Railway Gardens for Natter with Neighbours at 10.30am.

Thursdays

For £4 at the Splott Community Volunteers’ Breakfast Club you can get a hot cooked breakfast and a bag of 10 items from their food pantry, including a fridge item, freezer item and tinned goods, fried goods and fresh fruit & veg. Find them at the back of the old STAR Leisure Centre on Splott Road, entry opposite A1 Tyres on Railway Street.

There are two coll activities at Railway Gardens on a Thursday morning: Tai Chi at 10am and Creative Writing at 10.30am. Find out more here.

Fridays

Digital skills at Splott Community Volunteers runs from 10am to 12 noon and is open to all, regardless of abilities. Come in for a cuppa and a cake and get help from the Cardiff Council digital skills team.
